I've read on other forums its the OD "E" clip. Its about a 5 dollar piece but you need to drop the entire tranny. I have the FX4 04 and have the SAME excact problem!!!
apparently this is a very common problem! I have a 2006 FX4 5.4L that seems to do the same thing. My truck seems to run fine until i get around 60-70 MPH and 2K RPM and then it just shutters real bad until the RPMs run up. It doesnt seem to do it with the OD switched out. I have replaced plugs and coils as well as Cam Pos sensor. Does anyone have any ideas???

I concur, it is most likely that the overdrive servo retaining clip has broken and parts get lodged in places in the valve body where they shouldn't be or the servo itself is bad.

To repair you will need to remove the valve body.
