Disappearing Odometer

We purchased our 2006 Ford F150 XL 2nd hand with the odometer blank. The instrument cluster was replaced by the seller for us and the odometer did show mileage for about a month but then it started disappearing and has gone all together again.:(

Or insurance company insists the odometer must be working.

Can anyone give us a clue as to what is wrong?

It has been suggested that the mileage reading is not stored in the instrument cluster but in a computer somewhere? Does anyone know?

We are thinking that changing the instrument cluster again would not necessarily sort our problem.

Someone else said that shining a torch on the odometer would show the mileage but it doesn't.

We are also having trouble finding anyone in the Hampshire UK area that is willing to sort out this problem for us as we are not car mechanics.

Before anything else, I would get behind the instrument cluster and ensure that the connector are clean and then re-seat the connector to see if it helps.

I did some research and found that this was a common issue for Ford for a couple of years and that they did have a bad batch of clusters but there was no real solution past replacing a defective one for a new one. For the record, the mileage should be incrementing the way it should but just doesn't display the way it should.

I'll keep looking to see if I can find anything else.

Thanks Mac. It's good to know there is someone out there with some ideas. When we have recovered from the flu we will check the instrument cluster connectors and let you know how it goes.

I watched a video on Youtube as to how to fix the odometer on my 2000 XLT. It was soooo easy to resolder the one cracked connector onthe back of the PC board. Check out YouTube and go from there. Don't be shy, it's one of the easiest fixes I've ever pulled off..... Works fantastic now, important in my job where I get paid mileage.
Does anybody know if I change out my cluster will it show the correct miles for the vehicle or does it retain the miles that was in the cluster before?

Thanks:confused:
Everything is stored in the PCM so swapping out the cluster won't affect the readout.
