OK, so just recently my 03 f150 sport 2x4 V6 has had a funny problem. While driving, suddenly it will go right to idle rpm and I will have no response in the gas pedal, until I let off and re-apply, and that only works sometimes. I replaced the fuel filter hoping that might have been the issue, and it worked fine for that day, I took it out for about a half hour and multiple stops and starts. there are no codes and no check engine light. I was thinking maybe throttle position sensor, but wouldn't that throw a code? or maybe the 02 sensors, but again what about a code?
some days it seems worse than others, today it drove about 20 feet and completely died, then upon startup it idled really rough and the gas pedal did almost nothing but make it jump around a bit. Then after it sat for about 2 minutes it fired right up like normal. Any input is appreciated!!!!
thanks!
If you're reading codes from a auto parts supplier you may not be seeing the codes at all. Ford dealerships have the right kind of reader that can do a diagnostic reading of the PCM and pinpoint the issue.
From what you describe it does sound like maybe the MAF sensor is going bad as the TPS takes its info from that sensor. Try cleaning it first to see if it makes a difference.
I did clean the MAF after I posted the thread, made no difference. I didn't have an auto parts place chek for codes, I have a code reader myself, but it found nothing, are you saying that a general obd2 reader may not find the codes? Again there is not a check engine light on either
Correct, the readers you can buy for around $100 are nowhere near 100% accurate. The ones used at the dealership dive in to the PCM (regardless of the presence of a CEL) and read actual sensor parameters before failure and can read a marginal sensor.
I can't count the number of times I've seen people chase an issue and end up replacing $500 worth of sensors only to find a simple cleaning of a sensor was all that was needed.
While not a cheap thing to have done (usually close to $100 for a diagnostic test) they will put you on the right track.
Well taking it to a ford dealer might have been an option yesterday, but today it won't get me there, it will start, but now every time I give it gas it seems to want to die... RPMS drop and it just about dies all the way but not quite. When I apply gas I do hear what I would call a puff of air noise near the intake manifold or even in the crankcase, hard to tell. Is that a normal sound? It's fairly loud. I can rev it to about 1250 RPMS before it starts to cut out. And the idle is slightly higher than normal, probably around 750-800 rather than about 600. Any ideas for me to try to look at before I end up paying to tow it?
Yea, all the lines I can access look fine, I don't hear a vacuum leak, at least without using any hose or anything, I will try a bit of hose or something of that nature and see if I can hear anything, and I might try spraying some soapy water on the lines and see what happens. I read somewhere to try and disconnect the MAF and start the engine to see if it runs better or not too. If it does run fine then I assume it's a bad MAF???
