Transmission Jerking when cold

18613 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ruizfx4
With the engine and trans cold (not wintertime cold) when my truck shifts from 2nd to 3rd it gives a hard jerk. After I drive it a mile or so the problem goes away. Anybody else had any similar problems?

I have experienced this also but not as often as the miles go on. Not impressed that there is no tranny dipstick to check the oil. was curious to see if oil level was OK to find out no dipstick. What gives?
I didn't realize they didn't have a dipstick!! I have right at 2,500 miles on mind and it still has the jerk. I have plans to take it in and have them look at it in a week or so. Been deer hunting since I bought it and hadn't had time!!!

It is there you get at it from underneath . Std transmissions had no dipsticks for years
Took my truck to the garage and left it overnight. The guy that worked on it said it was one quart low on transmission fluid and was actually jumping out of gear. It did ok while driving it home but the engine and trans was warm so I have no idea if it's fixed or not. One thing I did notice was on the info screen where it shows gas mileage and etc it showed what gear the truck was in while driving. It never had that info on the screen before and didn't even know it was suppose to be there.
Hopefully this morning it was working as advertised!
I've had same problem, shifts hard, only have 3500 miles on it
They reflashed the trans about two weeks ago and its still doing the very same thing. Now have 12,000 miles on it. I think the trans guy at the dealership thinks I'm being to picky. He rode with me and felt the jerk and told me to keep driving it. I also had another problem about a month ago when I backed out my drive and put it in Drive it rolled backward for 2-3 seconds and jerked into gear. Dealership says the computer is not showing any trans slips.
I have a 2013 FX4 SCrew 5.0 with about 600 miles on it. The trans jerks occasionally.
My 2012 F 150 SCrew 5.0 did the same thing. I traded it in with less than 5k miles.
Both trucks seem to have the issue when I would drive erratically, such as, giving it a lot of throttle, then backing out of the throttle quickly.. I also noticed it on really cold mornings, when outside temps were under 20 degrees.
My '12 SCrew 5.0 4x4 does not do this. When cold, it may take a few seconds t shift from 2nd to 3rd. If this happens, I just back off on the throttle a bit, and it shifts. This in only when cold. No jerking or slipping.

I hope you can get this fixed up. I will be watching ours for this issue. We love our truck!
Transmission Jerk

My transmission constantly jerks from 2nd to 3rd gear. It varies between a very hard jerk to a softer thump. Seems to be related to a time delay in the shift. I have 13,000 miles on the truck. I am about to take it in to the dealer.
I've taken my truck to the dealer 3-4 times and even left it overnight and of course get the "we couldn't notice anything" answer. I've also noticed that if I back out of my driveway which is about 100 feet around a 5 degree uphill angle and then come to a complete stop once I'm in the street and put it in Drive it will sometime jerk, stall and even once rolled backward about 10 feet while in Drive! I love my truck, just wished Ford knew how to build a tranny.
cold start jerking 5.0

I have a 2012 f150 fx4 with the 5.0 in . It jerking really hard on cold starts has anyone changed the timing on the ignition and if so did it fix the problem? I think I'm going to take it in next week and see if they can fix it

I should have followed up with my post above! They changed out what they called a shift selector and all my problems with the jerking went away.
